about

ABOUT THIS TAPE:

A box of cassette tapes were found in a derelict Victorian terrace in Birmingham, labelled by their curator as being recorded in the late 1970's-early 1980's
On playing, the tapes seem to include various sound experiments, speech recordings, numbers stations, libary music etc the result of unnamed pirate radio stations, intercepted covert military/government transmissions or from a place where the future and past meet in the wash of the radio waves?
The tape will be initially presented as a download via Bandcamp as two ‘sides’, however it is recommended that the tape is listened to in one sitting, on headphones in the early hours to get the full experience.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

Current curator ALLAN MURPHY

…….. is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. His long term unit/project is the MIDWICH YOUTH CLUB (and hobby centre) Allan and James both share the same interests in retro ephemera and futurist electronica, and the ‘Pages from Ceefax’ found-tape project will be the first time they have worked together in the studio.

Allan’s influences can be heard throughout the music that appears on the tape, mainly from the world of Childrens/Adults TV programme themes, Incidental music from 1970’s/1980’s, childhood short wave radio listening sessions in the early hours, Prog Rock, Jazz Fusion and the Radiophonic Workshop which complement James’ poetry and prose pieces, and help to explore the worlds behind corporate video idents and test cards, lucid dreams and synaesthesia.
